The federal government has decided to maintain existing fuel prices for the second half of January 2026, providing temporary stability to consumers amid fluctuating international oil markets.

According to an official notification, the prices of high-speed diesel (HSD) and motor spirit (petrol) will remain unchanged for the next fortnight, effective from January 16 to January 31, 2026. The decision follows recommendations submitted by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and approval by the Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division).

Under the current pricing structure, high-speed diesel will continue to be sold at Rs. 257.08 per litre, while petrol will remain available at Rs. 253.17 per litre. These rates were last reviewed at the start of January and will now stay in place until the next scheduled revision.

Officials familiar with the matter say the move aims to balance public relief with fiscal considerations, especially after notable reductions announced earlier this month. During the previous pricing cycle, diesel prices were cut by Rs. 8.57 per litre, while petrol saw a reduction of Rs. 10.28 per litre, easing transportation and commuting costs to some extent.

Fuel pricing in Pakistan is reviewed every two weeks and is influenced by global oil trends, exchange rate movements, and domestic taxation. High-speed diesel, in particular, plays a critical role in the economy as it is widely used in transport, agriculture, and power generation, while petrol directly impacts daily commuting expenses for millions of households.

The next review of petroleum prices is expected at the end of January, when the government will reassess rates based on international market developments and revenue requirements.
