A persistent cold wave across the plains of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has prompted the provincial government to revise school timings in order to protect students from harsh weather conditions. The updated schedule will come into effect after the conclusion of winter vacations.
Revised School Timings in KP
According to an official notification issued by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Department, all schools in the plain areas of the province will follow new operating hours starting January 16, 2026.
Under the revised plan:
-
Primary schools will operate from 9:00am to 1:30pm
-
Middle, high, and higher secondary schools will run from 9:00am to 2:20pm
These adjusted timings are specifically designed to reduce students’ exposure to early-morning cold, which has intensified in recent days across many districts.
Reason Behind the Decision
Weather conditions in KP’s plains have remained unusually cold, with low temperatures affecting daily routines. Education authorities stated that the change in school timings is a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring the health, safety, and comfort of students, particularly younger children who are more vulnerable to extreme cold.
By starting classes later in the morning, schools can avoid the coldest hours of the day while maintaining academic continuity.
What Parents and Schools Should Know
School administrations have been advised to strictly follow the revised timings and ensure that students are informed in advance. Parents are also encouraged to take additional precautions, such as ensuring children are dressed warmly and reach school safely during the cold spell.
Final Note
The revised schedule will remain in place until further notice and may be reviewed depending on weather conditions. The KP government continues to monitor the situation and is expected to issue updates if the cold wave persists or intensifies.
